This is a report on the achievements on computers in education in Brazil over the last 12 months. This report is divided in 2 parts:

a)       Events of the Brazilian Computer Society (SBC)

b)       Actions of the Brazilian Government

Events of the Brazilian Computer Society

The Brazilian Computer Society promoted three major events:

a)       The Brazilian Symposium on Computers in Education (SBIE), to be held in Vitoria, ES, in November 2001. This symposium is annual and was on its XII edition. It usually gathers about 300 people, mainly researchers from universities and teachers from local schools.

b)       The Workshop on Computers in School (WIE), held in Fortaleza, CE, in July 2001, during the SBC's National Conference.

c)       The Workshop on Computer Science Education (WEI), held in Fortaleza, CE, in July 2001, during the SBC's National Conference.

The events of the Brazilian Computer Society - Special Committee on Computers in Education may be found in: http://www.inf.ufsc.br/sbc-ie/ and http://www.sbc.org.br/.

The SBC-Special Committee on Computers in Education also publishes an interdisciplinary magazine every six months: the "Brazilian Journal on Computers in Education". This year, numbers 8 and 9 are being published. One of its sections presents abstracts of Brazilian dissertations and theses on computers in education. Papers are published in Portuguese, but with abstracts in English: http://www.inf.ufsc.br/sbc-ie/revista/.

Actions of the Brazilian Government

MEC - Ministry of Education

The Ministry of Education in cooperation with the Brazilian Computer Society promotes a Course on Quality of Informatics Curricula, including computer science, computer engineering and information systems. In 2001 the course approaches different proposals for pedagogical plans. It is expected that this course could be done in 2002 in strict cooperation with the WG3.2 Working Conference on Informatics Curricula, Teaching Methods and Best Practice - ICTEM 2002, to be held in Florianópolis, Brazil.
